Lagos State Speaker Must Go – Jail Him NOW! By Baba Aye

The corrupt practices of Mr Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly (LSHA) have been brought to light. In a series of articles over the last few weeks, Sahara Reporters revealed several incidents of the chief lawmaker’s plunder of public funds and attempts to cover up by lodging these illegitimately acquired monies under false names. Based on this exposé “Concerned Nigerians”, an NGO, has written to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to have Mr Obasa arrested and prosecuted. But thus far, nothing has been done by EFCC or any government agency charged with ensuring proper conduct of public officials or EFCC and ICPC.

Some of the identified instances of Mr Obasa’s light fingers are collection of N45.8m for a children’s Christmas party last year – which never held. The fake children’s Christmas party money was not enough for Mr Speaker’s end of year flenjor. So, for his trip along with 18 other lawmakers around the same time, they allocated N80m as estacode.

Similarly, he collected the sum of N258m supposedly for printing invitation cards for the inauguration of the Lagos state lawmakers. As if it were not criminal enough for someone to claim such an amount was used for such purpose, an added fact is that he approved this sum three months after the event! Thus obviously, that was only meant to cover some tracks of his thievery or simply provide “money for the boys”.

Obviously, for Mr Obasa, since they (himself, his party and of course their Jagaban of a leader Mr Bola Ahmed Tinubu(BAT), former governor of the state) are in control, state money is there for the picking – including for personal fàájì, so he had absolutely no problem with drawing N17m from the state coffers to refurbish his personal residence. And by the way, he similarly just dipped his hands into the Lagos state government’s kitty for another N53m to cover the expenses of his personal trip to the United States with his lover.

More importantly, there are grounds to conclude that these not insignificant amounts represent just a tip of the iceberg of corruption traceable to Mr Obasa. Sahara Reporters also discovered that there are “at least 64 bank accounts” operated by the thieving speaker of a thieving house of assembled crooks. All these accounts, whilst using different names are linked to the same Bank Verification Number BVN: 2296663231. And this BVN is that of Mr Mudashiru Obasa.

These accounts scattered across Polaris Bank, Zenith Bank, Access Bank, Ecobank Nigeria, Stanbic IBTC Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank, United Bank for Africa, First City Monument Bank and Wema Bank were registered with several names including: Ajayi Mudashiru Obasa, Obasa Abdulrahman Gbadunola and Gabriel Adedoyin Savage. And some were for companies which have been serving the purpose of slushingmonies from Lagos state’s treasury, such as AdesavInternational Ventures, Fabric Splash Ventures, Swifthillinternational Ventures and Quick Solution International.

One of the reasons for putting the BVN system in place, as we were told at the time in 2014, was to enable the banking system establish a watch-list of bank customers identified by their BVNs, who have been involved in fraudulent activities. S

o, how could so many leading banks give the impression that they were not aware of the fraudulent hinges of Obasagatewhen it was being constructed with the whooping number of sixty-four bank accounts?! And indeed, how many of those politicians already charged or convicted for corruption have the banks blown the whistle on? None! Rather, BVN is used to track poor working-class people who have been indebted in one bank, to stop them having access to money from the banking system through other banks. It is like a spider’s web, set to catch the insect they consider poor people to be, but not the  barawo of a political elephant in the room.

The case of Mr Obasa is reflective of widespread corruption across all tiers of government, amongst but not limited to the “legislathieves” arm of government. Despite being probably the highest paid and most underperforming legislators in the world (in the midst of one of the least paid working-class globally), members of the National Assembly have become notorious for corruption.

And even when any legislator at national or state level is convicted of corruption, he or she still has full rights to maintain her/his seat in parliament and keep collecting millions of naira as monthly take-home “pepper”. This is supposedly because being an ex-convict only precludes one from contesting elections into parliament and not from being a member of that parliament. It is only the Code of Conduct Bureau which has the powers to remove such a lawmaker. But it has never exercised this power.

The EFCC (along with its sister ICPC) is another kettle of the same kind of “paddy paddy” fish. Whilst it has a knack for posturing as the nemesis of corrupt officials, it has actually been used mainly to hound those persons amongst the coterie of “vagabonds in power” who refuse to cooperate with the vagabonds-in-chief at different levels.

It is not difficult for example to see that behind the confidence of Obasa’s brazen roguery lies the pillar on Bourdillon of the batty Tinubu. The system of high rolling corruption is not unlike the more mundane “checkpoint” collections of the police. You don’t last long on the checkpoint if you don’t “deliver” to the DPO (or bank manager as Fela rightly note), who also delivers to the Area Commander and so on and so forth, up to the “managing director”.

It is also important to note that apart from each of these levels of thieves feathering their nests with taxpayers’ money, as different variants of àmàlà politicians, they also set aside some of the stolen loot for oiling their political machinery. They need war chests of lots of money for elections which they have reduced to cash and carry politics of the absurd.

Corruption in high places is written into the DNA of capitalism. It is not only in the political sphere and it is not only in Nigeria (the MPs expenses scandal in Britain readily comes to mind, as just one example). Capitalism itself is based on theft – of the unpaid labour of poor workers and from the earth, our collective home which the bosses pillage and despoil, in search of ever-expanding wealth. Corruption as a particular form of such theft, which is illegitimate and often illegal even by the hypocritically formulated standards of the bosses themselves, is a major lubricant for sealing “deals” in organised private sector and for politicians ostentatious lifestyles in the public sphere.

We must fight against corruption, showing its various connections; to the worsening living conditions of the poor masses, and to the capitalist system which breeds it and which it helps reinforce. Corruption has disastrous impact on the lives of the poor working masses. Trillions of naira that could have been used to provide quality healthcare for all, free education and qualitative cheap housing have been stolen by those in power over the years.

Forcing the likes of Mr Mudashiru Obasa out of power with mass mobilisation and seeing him off to jail would send home a clear message to the thieving bosses that enough is enough. Trade unions, civil society organisations and communities, particularly in Lagos, must lend their voices to the call for the speaker to be removed immediately, tried and jailed. Nothing less is acceptable.

Thieves 'raid homes of Lampard & Leicester's late owner Srivaddhanaprabha

Thieves 'raid homes of Lampard & Leicester's late owner Srivaddhanaprabha

Thieves have raided the homes of Chelsea boss Frank Lampard and Leicester City’s late owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha.

They stole more than £1million of valuables from billionaire Vichai’s house, left as a shrine following his death.

The heist in Knightsbridge, West London, came ten days after a similar raid on Lampard’s £12million home in nearby Chelsea.

Burglars got away with £60,000 of jewellery and watches belonging to Frank and wife Christine, both 41.

It was the fourth time the ex-England star has been targeted. Details of the break-ins, last December, have never been made public by police.

But Flying Squad detectives are studying CCTV footage of both, with crooks targeting the rich and famous believed to be responsible.

The Thai family of Vichai are devastated at the break-in at his home, untouched since the 60-year-old Foxes boss died in a chopper crash at Leicester in October 2018.

A source said: “Both burglaries may have been carried out by the same team.

“The family of Vichai are understandably very upset.

“His house was totally ransacked and a lot of precious and sentimental items were taken.

“The thieves have effectively desecrated his spirit. None of the items stolen during either of the burglaries have been recovered. Police are apparently working on the assumption that Vichai’s house and the Lampards were both deliberately targeted.”

A gang raided Lampard’s townhouse on December 1 — after it was previously targeted in 2018. In 2005 and 2008 thieves stole cars from his previous home, including a Mercedes and Aston Martin.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed it was investigating. No arrests have been made.

82.9 million Nigerians live in poverty – NBS

’Femi Asu

The National Bureau of Statistics has said 40.1 per cent of the country’s population live in poverty.

The NBS, in the executive summary of the 2019 poverty and inequality report released on Monday, said over 82.9 million Nigerians lived below its poverty line of N137,430 per year.

The bureau said between September 2018 and October 2019, it conducted the latest round of the Nigerian Living Standards Survey after 10 years.

The NLSS is the official survey that is the basis for measuring poverty and living standards.

The NBS said, “In Nigeria 40.1 per cent of the total population were classified as poor. In other words, on average, four out of 10 individuals in Nigeria have real per capita expenditures below N137,430 per year.

“This translates to over 82.9 million Nigerians who are considered poor by national standards. It is important to note that this number excludes the state of Borno.”

It said while the NLSS 2018-19 included households from Borno, that sample was not representative of the whole state since only households from “accessible” (safe-to visit) areas were interviewed.

“Thus, the Borno sample is considered non-random and non-representative,” the bureau added.

Dutch national coach Ronald Koeman required hospital treatment after suffering a heart problem, his wife told De Telegraaf newspaper on Sunday.

The 57-year-old underwent a “cardiac catheterisation” procedure at a hospital in Amsterdam after complaining of feeling unwell at his home.

“The speed with which he was taken to the hospital and the quick intervention of the doctors allowed his condition to be stabilised,” said Bartina Koeman.

Koeman, who has coached the Dutch side since 2018, is expected to be discharged from hospital on Monday.

“It was a shock,” tweeted the Dutch football federation.

“Happily, things are already a little better. Strength and a good recovery, coach.”

Koeman, a standout defender at Ajax, PSV, Feyenoord and Barcelona as well as the Dutch team in his playing career, had already qualified the Netherlands for Euro 2020.

However, the tournament has been pushed back to 2021 due to the coronavirus.

Premier League clubs are preparing for the possibility of playing the whole of next season behind closed doors.

While clubs discuss proposals to complete this season behind closed doors at neutral venues, they have also started considering the impact of playing the 2020-21 season without fans as well.

Clubs are expecting football to get back to normal only when there is a coronavirus vaccine. Most experts believe a vaccine will not become available until the middle of next year.

In the meantime, many clubs believe one of the first things they can do is budget for spending little or no money on transfers when the next window opens.

The Premier League have said failing to finish this season would cost its 20 clubs more than £1billion, but playing next season behind closed doors is likely to have an even more dramatic impact on club finances.

BREAKING: Don’t resume on Monday, Sanwo-Olu orders civil servants

BREAKING: Don’t resume on Monday, Sanwo-Olu orders civil servants

    Kayode Oyero

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has ordered all civil servants in the state to stay away from work on Monday, May 4.

The PUNCH reports that the five-week-old total lockdown imposed on the nation’s economic capital terminates on Sunday night, May 3, and the new phase of gradual easing starts on Monday, as ordered by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

But the governor in a statement on Sunday evening asked all its civil servants not to resume work immediately, noting that the delayed resumption is a deliberate attempt to prevent overcrowding in the state.

He, however, added that emergency workers and those on essential duties would be allowed to work on Monday.

Sanwo-Olu said, “In amending the work guidelines earlier issued, which stopped members of the public service from Grade Level 1 to 12 from going to work; we have had to review this position and we are extending the directive to all civil servants, regardless of level. All civil servants must stay away from work on Monday.

“On Tuesday, only officers from Grade Level 15 and above have express permission to come to work. All other essential officers that may need to be at work will be informed by the Accounting Officer of each Ministry as may be required.

“From Monday on, there will be a curfew from 8 pm to 6 am and all movements within these hours are prohibited, except for people on essential services, which are agro-products, petroleum products, relief materials, and food supplies.

“We want to use this as a demonstration of our commitment to the gradual easing of the lockdown. We do not want people to rush out tomorrow and see the easing of the lockdown as an attempt to believe that the spread of the pandemic is all over.”

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on Saturday night, of the total 2388 coronavirus infections reported in the country, 1068 cases were recorded in Lagos with about 30 attendant fatalities and 247 recoveries, the highest by any state in Nigeria.

The PUNCH reports that Sanwo-Olu recently launched the #MaskUpLagos campaign to sensitise the about 20 million population of the state on the need to wear face masks while in public places, observe social distancing and practice good hygiene as part of collective efforts to curb the spread of the lethal virus.

The Spanish side won La Liga in 2011-12, but their manager feels they were also the best team on the continent

Jose Mourinho believes Real Madrid were the best team in Europe in 2011-12 despite falling short in the Champions League.

Under Mourinho's guidance, Madrid ended Barcelona's run of three straight La Liga titles that season, setting records for most goals (121) and points (100) in a single season.

Rivals Barcelona finished nine points behind Mourinho's Madrid

Real Madrid cruised through the Champions League group stage, winning all six of their matches in a group that included LyonAjax and Dynamo Zagreb.

After taking down CSKA Moscow in the round of 16, Real Madrid cruised past APOEL in the quarter-finals by an 8-2 scoreline.

But they fell in the Champions League semi-finals, losing to Bayern Munich – who were beaten by Chelsea in the decider in a memorable Champions League final – on penalties.

Mourinho, now in charge of Tottenham, believes Madrid were then the best team in Europe.

"That season, Real Madrid were the best team in Spain and also the best in Europe," he told Marca.

"That's why it was so hard for us to deal with going out to Bayern in the Champions League."

Mourinho said the way Madrid ended Barcelona's La Liga run was important, although the club have won just one league crown since – in 2016-17.

"Ending that Barcelona dominance and doing it by achieving a record points tally and a record goals tally like that makes it even more interesting and important because we did it in the best way possible," he said.

"It wasn't only that we won La Liga, it's that we did it in a way that made history."

Mourinho took charge at Real Madrid from 2010-13 after winning the Champions League with Inter, replacing Manuel Pellegrini after the Chilean boss failed to win a trophy during his lone season with the club.

The Portuguese manager, who also managed Chelsea and Porto prior to heading to Spain, win that famous La Liga title as well as a Copa del Rey and a Supercopa de Espana in 2012.

Mourinho rejoined Chelsea in 2013, returning to Stamford Bridge and winning the Premier League in 2014-15.

Following a meeting on Friday, the English top flight said it hopes to return to the pitch but won't take any steps without government approval

The Premier League has reiterated its desire to complete the 2019-20 season, which has been suspended since March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The league's clubs met on Friday to discuss steps forward, but said that no decisions were made during the meeting and that nothing would happen without government approval.

"At a meeting of Premier League Shareholders today, clubs discussed possible steps towards planning to resume the 2019-20 season, when it is safe and appropriate to do so," a statement read.

"It was reiterated that the thoughts of all are with those directly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Furthermore, the Premier League’s priority is the health and safety of players, coaches, managers, club staff, supporters and the wider community.

"The League and clubs are considering the first tentative moves forward and will only return to training and playing with Government guidance, under expert medical advice and after consultation with players and managers.

"The League welcomed the creation of the Government medical working group for a return of elite sport, which met for the first time this morning.

"No decisions were taken at today’s Shareholders’ meeting and clubs exchanged views on the information provided regarding 'Project Restart'.

"It was agreed that the PFA, LMA, players and managers are key to this process and will be further consulted.

"The clubs reconfirmed their commitment to finishing the 2019-20 season, maintaining integrity of the competition and welcomed the Government’s support."

On Thursday the Premier League's guidelines for "Project Restart" were revealed, with the league targeting a potential June 8 return.

Among the guidelines to follow, players will be required to wear face masks at training grounds and all equipment, including footballs, will be disinfected before and after use.

COVID-19: Why we can’t reduce VAT now -FG

COVID-19: Why we can’t reduce VAT now -FG By Abbas Jimoh |  May 1, 2020

SGF, Boss Gida Mustapha The Federal Government has said that the calls for the reduction of the Value Added Tax (VAT) to cushion the effect of the COVID-19 would not be workable now. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and Chairman of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, said this on Friday in Abuja at the 24th joint national briefing of the committee. According to him, the goverment is particularly concerned about the need to ease up the lockdown, so that businesses can come upstream. He said that part of what he spoke about was to allow trade taxation and the other things because government must drive revenue to be able to meet even overheads of his management and personnel costs. ADVERTISEMENT Dear valued readers, subscribe to the Daily Trust e-paper to continue enjoying our diet of authoritative news. Kindly subscribe here He said, “We have been dependent on oil and we can see disruption that has happened with regards to our earnings in the oil and gas sector. The benchmark we had for the budget as totally be distorted. Now what we have is determined by market forces, how we sell what quantity we sell is totally beyond us. So there is a major decline in government revenue. “The VAT is a component of government revenue. Taxes either income tax or company Tax are all parts of government revenue. The increase from 5 percent to 7.5 percent was just brought in to application in February of 2020 all in an attempt to ramp up resources to meet our 2020 budget and into the future. “Let me explain even the sharing formula for VAT or whatever is done through the value-added tax. Only 15 percent goes to the federal government. 85 percent is shared between the states and the local governments. “So if you reduce VAT and couple with a decrease of income that comes into the Consolidated Revenue fund of the Federation, why are states at the end of the month gather to share through the Federation account allocation committee? There will be crisis. I can tell you that will be crisis,” Mustapha said. He said that whatever is needed to be done in terms of rigorous, elaborate and extensive collection of revenue must be done to be able to compensate for the losses that are coming in as a result of the downtown in the nation’s earnings with regards to oil and gas. He added, “And mostly VAT is always on luxury items. Most of the essential items are VAT exempted like drugs, sanitary things. Basic consumer goods are exempted from VAT. VAT is always related to luxurious consumptions. “So I think as much as possible I am not sure I want to advise at this stage for us to consider a reduction in the 7.5 percent VAT because that will really eat in to the earnings of the states and the local governments. Somebody alluded to the fact that salaries are not even been paid. So a major reduction who regards to our sources of earning will further deepen that crisis.” He said that the nation must therefore find a balance now to try as much as possible to maintain some bit of economic and physical stability in the system so that the interest and the earnings of the people is not jeopardized.
